All, and I mean all, retail Vista dvd's are the same. All x86 retail dvd's are the same and all x64 dvd's are the same. There are no upgrade dvd's for Vista like there are upgrade cd's with XP. The Vista product key alone makes the difference as to whether you have an upgrade edition or full.

And is this "SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2" necessary for So yes, they can be installed on the XP and Vista. If it's Vista, then you need to apply SP2 to prevent some known issues.

The low end major manufacturer machines are generally not upgradeable should you ever decide you need to upgrade. I would also personally stay away from Vista for the time being and stay with XP. Vista is very hardware intensive - if you do go that route - get at least 2gb of RAM and preferable 3gb.
